Welcome to our Website!
We are a group of retired but never tired educators and support staff who spent productive years working at one of Canada's outstanding, public high schools - Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary, Alberta , Canada. We support public education and believe that there is lots of life and living left after retiring from teaching, administrative or support service work at SWC.
The group includes former secretaries, library personnel, teachers, department heads, assistant principals and principals. A conservative estimate indicates that perhaps the group represents about
5000 + active professional educator years.
We believe in excellence in public education and excellence in
enjoying our well deserved retirement years. We salute those still working
at SWC and invite all SWC retirees to join us.
An annual highlight is our Golden Bulldogs Christmas Celebration.
A number of Golden Bulldogs also meet weekly in Calgary on Tuesday afternoons and also often engage in the exciting sport of Pickleball and fun Poker Evenings. All GB'ers
are invited to join the Tuesday Group throughout the year
who currently are meeting at a local pub in northwest Calgary. Check with
the esecretary at
goldenbulldog@shaw.ca where the next meeting will be held.
There is also an "offshore" chapter of the Golden Bulldogs in Nanoose/Parksville/Qualicum. B.C. Wherever and whenever the Golden Bulldogs meet, good cheer and good company is evident!!

"Otium cum dignitate”,
our motto, is how Cicero advised the honest person to
live. The word “otium” is not really translatable and is often wrongly
interpreted as the “dolcefarniente” of Mediterranean fame. Rather than a
life of idleness, Cicero (I am constantly fascinated by the fact that this
great man’s name is Latin for “Chick Pea”) was advising an ensemble of
non-political and non-remunerable activities that allow for the “humanistic”
development of an individual.
In other words, Cicero advised that a
vir bonus (good person)
should dedicate himself/herself to study, writing, intimate and erudite
conversation, meditation, finding time for family and friends, and of course
some time in the countryside. Together with “otium”,
Cicero also recommended a strong dose of “dignitas”
which was very important to people of his time. Everything was to be done
with a sense of measure and moderation. It’s a lovely philosophy of living
to try to pursue especially when put in the context of today’s hustle and
bustle.
Otium cum dignitate does not mean dolce far niente which
literally means "sweet doing nothing"
= "Delicious idleness". Sheer indulgent relaxation and blissful laziness,
being deliciously idle." Although, some of that, in retirement, is also
wonderful!
