The Golden Bulldogs are a loosely knit
group of retired employees of Sir Winston Churchill High School in
Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The group consists of educators and
support staff of all ranks who share a common love of good
fellowship and good times.
The Golden Bulldogs' motto is :

retirement. |

The Vancouver Island Golden Bulldogs
Here are some pictures
of the Vancouver Island Branch of the Golden Bulldog's get together
at the Crow and Gate on May 20, 2015. There was a good turn out with
Bulldogs from Victoria (Jack H.), Chemainus (Bev and Vern H.),
Saltair (Margaret Ann A.), Parksville (Lise and Grant S.), and
Qualicum Beach (Norman and Teresa L., and David A. and Claire W.).
The weather was great
and the camaraderie was outstanding. Thanks to everyone who came out
and our regrets to those who couldn’t make it. Hopefully we will see
you next year.
Enjoy the rest of the
summer - David. |

A Golden Bulldog enjoying good health and great
summer weather!
(Kathleen J.) |
"Otium cum dignitate”, our motto, is how Cicero advised the
honest person to live. The word “otium” is not really translatable
and is often wrongly interpreted as the “dolcefarniente” of
Mediterranean fame. Rather than a life of idleness, Cicero (I am
constantly fascinated by the fact that this great man’s name is
Latin for “Chick Pea”) was advising an ensemble of non-political and
non-remunerable activities that allow for the “humanistic”
development of an individual.
In other words, Cicero advised that a vir bonus (good person) should
dedicate himself/herself to study, writing, intimate and erudite
conversation, meditation, finding time for family and friends, and
of course some time in the countryside. Together with “otium”,
Cicero also recommended a strong dose of “dignitas” which was very
important to people of his time. Everything was to be done with a
sense of measure and moderation. It’s a lovely philosophy of living
to try to pursue especially when put in the context of today’s
hustle and bustle.
Otium cum dignitate does not mean dolce far niente which
literally means "sweet doing nothing"
= "Delicious idleness". Sheer indulgent relaxation and blissful
laziness, being deliciously idle." Although, some of that, in
retirement, is also wonderful! |
